More and more German companies are short of skilled workers

In the year 2023, Germany finds itself confronting a pressing challenge concerning the availability of skilled labor. As per the data gleaned from the ifo Business Survey, the percentage of companies experiencing a deficiency in adequately qualified personnel increased to 43.1% in July, marking a notable rise from the 42.2% reported in April. It is worth noting that this figure has neared an all-time peak, nearly reaching 50%, back in July 2022.

The shortage of skilled workers is particularly acute in sectors such as healthcare, information technology (IT), engineering, and construction. These industries grapple with a heightened demand for skilled workforce, largely attributed to factors such as shifting demographics, the relentless march of digital transformation, and the mounting requirements for infrastructure development.

The German labor market now grapples with an unprecedented scarcity of skilled professionals, which has led to over 630,000 vacant job positions. Consequently, Germany has recognized the urgency of harnessing immigrant workers to fortify its economic endeavors.

To address this situation, a new legislation pertaining to the immigration of skilled workers will be gradually implemented, commencing from November 2023. The “law on the further development of skilled worker immigration” establishes novel avenues for the entry of qualified workers from third countries.

In 2023, certain occupational categories stand out as being particularly in demand within the German labor market. These include engineers specializing in robotics, aerospace, and agri-food; positions related to e-commerce; cloud architects; game developers; nursing staff and healthcare professionals; data analysts and data scientists; experts focused on enhancing customer and employee satisfaction; and content managers.

Here are the in-demand jobs in Germany for 2023.

  1. Engineers (Robotics, Aerospace, and Agri-food): These professionals are highly sought after for their expertise in developing and enhancing technological solutions in fields like robotics, aerospace, and agri-food.
  2. E-commerce-related Jobs: Positions in e-commerce encompass a wide range of roles, from marketing and sales to logistics and web development, driven by the ever-expanding online retail industry.
  3. Cloud Architects: Cloud architects design and manage cloud computing infrastructure, critical in an era of data storage and computing in the cloud.
  4. Game Developers: Game developers create interactive entertainment software, contributing to the thriving gaming industry’s continuous growth.
  5. Nursing Staff and Healthcare Professions: The healthcare sector demands a variety of professionals, including nurses, doctors, and specialists, to address the evolving healthcare needs of the population.
  6. Data Analysts/Data Scientists: Data analysts and data scientists play a vital role in analyzing and interpreting data to inform decision-making and innovation across various industries.
  7. Customer and Employee Satisfaction Experts: These experts focus on improving customer and employee experiences, contributing to higher satisfaction and loyalty in business and workplace settings.
  8. Content Managers: Content managers oversee the creation and management of digital content, ensuring effective communication and engagement with target audiences.
